Mahmoud Elmardi, a Sudanese visual artist and novelist, was born in 1988 in the historic city of Bahri, Khartoum—a region renowned for its rich cultural and historical significance. From a young age, Elmardi was deeply influenced by Bahri’s vibrant and diverse environment, which played a foundational role in shaping his artistic talent and unique style. Elmardi pursued his higher education in visual arts, earning a bachelor’s degree in painting from the College of Fine and Applied Arts, Sudan University of Science and Technology, in 2018. His formal education, combined with his personal experiences and varied professional background, has enriched his artistic perspective, enabling him to explore and integrate a diverse range of elements into his work. Elmardi is recognised for his distinctive style, which masterfully combines abstraction and figurative symbolism. His works, including notable paintings like “Cities of Boredom,” “Blue in Travel,” and “Old Tree,” delve into profound themes such as collective memory, identity, belonging, and the intricate interplay between tradition and modernity. His remarkable ability to incorporate elements from his immediate environment, such as the town of “Bahri” and the Sudanese landscapes, allows him to create art that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. In addition to his visual art, Elmardi is an accomplished writer. He has published two acclaimed novels: “Secret of the Chisel” (2022), which won the Free Publication Prize, and “The Lost in the Mango Orchard” (2023), which received a literary award. These novels, like his paintings, explore themes of displacement, memory, and the quest for identity. His third novel, “The Walls of Guernica,” is expected to be released in 2025, with high anticipation of great success. Elmardi has been honoured for his artistic contributions with several prestigious awards, including the Katara Prize for Fine Arts in Qatar (2022) and the Arab Union for Culture Award (2024). One of his paintings was also selected as the official cover for the novel “Cities of Boredom” by Palestinian writer Nader Manhal. Furthermore, he was chosen for the list of artists to be featured at the Peru Biennial in Lima in 2024, cementing his position as an influential and respected voice in the contemporary art scene. Mahmoud Elmardi continues to live and work, dividing his time between Sudan and Egypt, where he actively participates in exhibitions and book fairs, such as the Cairo International Book Fair. His body of work, imbued with the cultural richness of his Sudanese heritage, makes him an important figure in contemporary art, offering a unique perspective on identity and belonging through his paintings and literary narratives.
