  • IF: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH … POWER? 5 MAY 2026

West Court, Jesus College 22 Jesus Lane, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Join Dr Eliane Glaser, author, BBC producer and Visiting Fellow at Jesus, and Prof Clare Chambers to explore where and how power is exerted today – both overtly and covertly, in public and in private – and why the term seems to have fallen out of fashion at a time when we need it more than ever. They will be joined by award-winning novelist Joanna Kavenna and author and broadcaster Phil Tinline. The event will be open to all.

  • IF: THE CHANGING CHARACTER OF WAR AND PEACEMAKING 6 MAY 2026

West Court, Jesus College 22 Jesus Lane, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Lord John Alderdice will draw on his experience as a key negotiator in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement to examine the shifting nature of global conflict and peacemaking within today's rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. As ongoing global conflicts threaten to marginalise the United Nations and the rules-based international order, peacemaking is also being forced to adapt to a new situation in which leaders are less often those who seek to resolve conflicts than those who conduct them. Lord Alderdice will bring his experience of politics, parliament and peacebuilding to an analysis of the problem and some ideas of what to do about it.

  • GLOBAL CULTURES: THE SAMURAI BOND – YOSHITSUNE & BENKEI CONCERT

West Court, Jesus College 22 Jesus Lane, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Join us at Jesus College, Cambridge, for ‘The Boy on Gojō Bridge’ – a performance by Yui Shikakura and Laura Sampson. Japanese art has long been captivated by Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the brilliant samurai of the Genji clan whose military genius led to decisive victories over the Heike in the 11th century Genpei wars. His life was one of triumph and tragedy, history and legend – with stories of his exploits shot through with supernatural encounters, magical journeys … and profound friendships. ‘The Boy on Gojō Bridge’ retells the story that made many of those famous victories possible: how Japan’s most famous ‘double act’ – Yoshitsune and the warrior monk Benkei – came into being. From their first meeting as foes in the ancient capital Kyoto, to the blossoming of what would become an alliance of love, skill and brotherhood; a pairing which continues to inspire Japanese performing arts to this day. Fighting talk, brilliant swordplay, and supernatural encounters with long-nosed Tengu will be brought to life in a vivid mix of dramatic narration and elements of kabuki music, including Nagauta song and live shamisen.

  • GLOBAL CULTURES: ABOVE THE DROWNING SEA 4 JULY 2026

West Court, Jesus College 22 Jesus Lane, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Above the Drowning Sea tells the story of the dramatic escape of European Jews from Nazi-controlled Europe to Shanghai on the eve of World War Two. As Hitler’s forces sought to expel the Jews from Europe, no other country would open its doors to the refugees. Their lives at stake, the refugees desperately looked for an escape from the coming Holocaust. Then, a door opened on the east coast of far-away China, in Shanghai, an “open city” itself in chaos from foreign invasion and civil war. But getting there required a “golden” document to get out of Nazi Europe – a visa from China.
