Exercise: Read the opening to Faith Adiele’s essay above about traveling solo as a Black woman through southern Thailand after having recently left the northern temple where she lived as a Buddhist nun. What combination of situational factors may be contributing to how she interprets her surroundings? How does she use description (setting) and dialogue (character) to set the story in motion? What do you imagine is going to happen?
