GLOBAL CULTURES: CENTRAL STATION 16 NOV 2025

Global Cultures at Jesus College is delighted to present a one-off screening of Walter Salles’ 1998 critically acclaimed ‘Central Station’, on 16th November 2025, as part of the UK/Brazil Season of Culture 2025-26, and with thanks to the Brazil Embassy in London. Restored in stunning relief, and starring Fernanda Montenegro, ‘Central Station’ is a modern cinematic classic that continues to delight audiences and shine a light on Brazil. To discuss the themes and topics in the film, we are thrilled to be joined by Latin American film expert Natalia Christofoletti Barrenha in Q&A immediately following the screening. About Natalia Christofoletti Barrenha
Natalia Christofoletti Barrenha is a film programmer, researcher, and expert. She earned her PhD in Film Studies from the University of Campinas – UNICAMP (Brazil), and is the author of several books and articles on Latin American cinema and women’s filmmaking. She worked as a programme curator at the Cultural Section of the Embassy of Brazil in London, where she created the Helena Solberg Cineclub. She is currently a Film Officer at the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland and also collaborates as a programmer with several film festivals and institutions worldwide, including the Jeden Svet Documentary Film Festival in Slovakia. She is also the co-founder of Cinema Mentiré, a pop-up film club promoting Latin American cinema in the UK.

The UK/Brazil Season of Culture 2025-26 is a year-long cultural exchange between the two countries that showcases the diverse and vibrant arts sectors of both nations. It marks 200 years of diplomatic relations and is designed to strengthen and build cultural connections between the UK and Brazil. It is a joint initiative between the British Council and Brazil’s Instituto Guimarães Rosa (IGR). The artistic programme across both countries encompasses theatre, film, visual arts, dance, music and literature and features a series of talks and academic conferences. The UK programme is presented with partners including the Barbican, ICA, BFI, Artichoke, the Natural History Museum, King’s College London, and Global Cultures at Jesus College.
This event is part of Panorama’s partnership with Jesus College, Cambridge. Global Cultures at Jesus College is produced by Panorama and led by Director Matthew Webb. Its goal is to contribute to Cambridge city beyond our walls, offering unique cultural moments with world-class figures through its regular events, which are open to all. In the last year alone, we have featured master craftspeople, Noh theatre mask makers, National Geographic photographers, and film directors, producers and talent. Monthly events throughout the year will provide many opportunities for you to participate.
